Something i've done to help myself grow? working on a few things recently. giving myself permission to make mis...no I now call them learning experiences. give myself permission to hang out with my daughter guilt free even if it means the house stays dirty, and my to do list gets longer. give myself permission to actively fantasize about my desires/hopes for the future ie google/research things I would like to see happen even if it may seem remote or far fetched like planning a move across the country, or a dream trip to italy. giving myself permission to fill a need or a desire guilt free like buying paints and taking a painting class. being aware of the physical clutter around me and getting rid of things not used or needed. this has helped me pinpoint places where i've also been keeping psychological clutter especially linked with things my mother has given me over the years. forcing myself to police my bounderies so i don't get resentful. taking baby steps forward intead of setting myself up for failure by pushing to take huge leaps. each of them small things but together they are huge. i'm also noticing the emotional effects... growing moments of contentment and more even moods, a growing level of comfort with myself, release of tension and frustration, actually being able to visualize my future, and best of all learning how to be active instead of passive in my own life.

What a great idea! Well, the biggest positive change in my life, in the recent past, has been my commitment to living a spiritual life through the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Quitting drinking and using drugs was the first step, but the journey and self-discovery has been so much more!

Thats SUCH a good idea. I like that its physical - taking a pen (or computer) and actually writing down the things. Great way to take charge, and a great way to move the stuff out of the brain and give it some oxygen. Thanks for the tip.
And...youre Winner #2! --ae

I learned a wonderful took for getting/keeping calm in the face of a stressor that is causing my brain to "spin up" with "whatifwhatifwhatif!" A gal in my Al-Anon group talked about writing a list broken up along the lines of the serenity prayer: what I can't change/what I can change. I've put it into practice, and it really helps me redirect worry into action and keeps me from confusing motion with action. I get more done, the actions I take have more positive effect, and I feel less overwhelmed in the face of a crisis.
